The Per Contra Prize for Short Fiction

GUIDELINES

The story must be the original work of the author; however, collaborative work of two authors is acceptable when so noted. All entries must be written in English. Translations of other author's works may not be submitted.

No previously published work or works forthcoming elsewhere may be submitted.

Simultaneous submissions are acceptable; if accepted elsewhere, we ask that they be withdrawn from the contest immediately, but the reading fee is non-refundable.

Stories must be at least 1,000 words and may not exceed 3,000 words.

Authors may send as many entries as they wish, but a $10 fee must accompany each submission.

Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, minimum 12 point type.

Author’s names, together with an accurate word count, and the title must appear on the cover sheet only. DO NOT PLACE AUTHOR’S NAME ON THE MANUSCRIPT.

Title and page number should appear on each page of the story.

Include a self-addressed postcard or envelope with postage if you want to be notified that your manuscript as been received.

SHORT STORY AWARD for NEW WRITERS

Deadline: November 30

Prizes:
	1st place wins $1,200, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, and 20 copies.
	2nd-place: $500 and possible publication.
	3rd-place: $300 and possible publication.

Other considerations:
	Open only to writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. (Entries, of course, must not have appeared in any print publication.)
	Please, no longer than 12,000 words. Any shorter lengths are welcome.
	Reading fee is $15 per story.

The contest is open from September 15, 2010, to December 1, 2010. Entries must be submitted by December 1, 2010. All entries will be considered for publication.

• All entries must be unpublished and 6,000 words or less. Please type and double-space.
• The contest entry fee is $20. You may submit only one story per entry, but you can enter as many times as you like. Before submitting a story, entrants should pay the $20 entry fee via PayPal (http://www.americanshortfiction.org/paypal.html). After the transaction is completed, you'll be directed to the Submission Manager.
• Keep track of your PayPal order number. You will need this number when you upload your contest entry via the American Short Fiction Submission Manager.
• The $20 fee entitles the entrant to electronic access to the contest issue.
• All entries should be uploaded to the American Short Fiction Submission Manager. Stories can be submitted in .rtf, .doc, and .pdf formats. Do not submit files in .docx.
