About Us
Short story collections. Literary fiction. Fiction that makes you go---wha? and then hmmm and then wha? again.
It's hard to find a place for many of these in the mainstream bookshelves.
Carraway Bay Press was formed by award-winning North Carolina author Dawn DeAnna Wilson when she wanted to find a venue to publish books electronically and in print for subjects that were notoriously hard to sell because they didn't fit into any type of "marketable" category.
Like short story collections.
It started with a collection of short stories, "Welcome to Shangri-La, North Carolina." One of the short stories in the collection was a semi-finalist for the Doris Betts Fiction Prize. Then, Dawn placed two of her TRADITIONALLY published novels --that had since gone out of print---onto Kindle.
We like what's happening. Heck if we know where it's going, but isn't that what life is about? Reaching out for that ever elusive green light at the end of the dock? (Hence our name)
It's all an experiment, really. We don't know where the digital e-reader e-revolution will take us. Heck, Dawn will be the first to admit she loves to read in the bathtub or swimming pool (which led to an unfortunate incident with The Great Gatsby at a water park, but that's another story), but wherever the future takes us, change is inevitable, and we want to produce titles that are well-written, eloquent, inspirational...and well, maybe just a bit kooky.
It's not just about being entertaining. It's about the unexpected.
We do accept submissions from time to time. E-mail us re: the address below. It's easier to say what we are NOT looking for than what we are looking for.
We are NOT looking for:
--- Romance---unless there's some kind of strange, quirkiness to it, like in the movie "Happy Accidents."
--- Westerns
--- Any novel where things are "just a dream" or the main character gets hit by a Mack truck.
---Erotica or porn. Though we could probably make more money at it if we did...on second thought---no, no erotica or porn.
--- Religious themes where everything ends up perfectly in life in the end for the good guys because they are good guys. Jesus is not a cowboy, people.
And here's a comic from Katie Beaton (she's not affiliated with Carraway Bay Press, but darn if her stuff isn't cool. We just wanted to link to her stuff because she gets it. Entertaining. Unexpected. Word.) Check it out on her website.
And if you want to send us anything from her website for Christmas or any major holiday, heck, we won't say no.
